Restoration of habitats of endangered species in Silma Nature Reserve

Type of Entry: Project
Website: http://life.silma.ee/index.htm
Duration: 01/11/2002 - 31/10/2006
Description:

The project will work on three nature reserves, Silma Nature Reserve, and two island reserves Osmussaare Landscape Reserve and Vormsi Landscape Reserve. Together these contain a significant share of these valuable habitats in Estonia. Livestock and machinery will be purchased to help farmers re-instate appropriate levels of mowing and grazing which will be funded through an annual management fee (co-financing contribution from the Ministry of Environment).

Overall the project will improve the habitat of coastal meadows, lagoons and small islets. It is linked with the "Boreal Baltic Coastal Meadow preservation in Estonia" project carried out until 2003. In addition to preservation and restoration measures, it aims to further develop a system of co-operation with the local community by promoting traditional economic activities, crafts and tourism and by improving the readiness of the farmers to participate in future agri-environment programmes. All three project sites will become part of the Natura 2000 network.
